Monday- Second rest day! Yay!
Tuesday – Run- 6 miles
Wednesday – 4 miles at lunch and Mobility class in the evening
Thursday – Power Pyramid- Learned that there is something called a one legged burpee. WHAT THE FUCK
Friday – 8 miles at northwood.
Feeling tired, having trouble kicking this cold. Weather blows ball sacks right now , hoping it gets better tomorrow.
Took a rest day on sunday
Ate lots of food.
Slept lot’s of sleep.

Felt really strong today. Pawtuck is all clear for running. Did not get enough food. Tomorrow is a rest day and I plan on eating many things.

Time to start tracking this whole thing again. Winter was pretty slow. Started doing the gym. Wish I had more to report but there just wasn’t anything exciting going on.
This week was first week after having a cold. I got most of my runs in and got to the gym three times.
Trails are finally clear and a lot drier than expected. I wore my Sportiva’s tonight and punched through some thick mud a few times. Workout was a 6 miler with 4 X 60 sec
hill repeats thrown in for fun. Legs were heavy but I picked it up after the repeats. I can’t wear the sportiva’s anymore this year. Ripping my feet apart. I love them but
I’ll just suffer with wet feet moving forward. Need to order a few pairs of N2’s for the first half of the summer. I’ll get more later in the summer and hope to go into the
hundred with at least two semi fresh pairs.
Workouts were strong this week. Shoulder is a little tweaked after yesterdays power pyramid workout. We started with two min of pullups. That’s always fun.
It was nice to get on sketchy today. I’m pretty lucky to have that thing right out my door. Food intake wasn’t as much as I was supposed to eat today. I’ll need to make up
for it tomorrow and Sunday. I have 16 miles scheduled for tomorrow. Going to try and hit all three peaks at pawtuck tomorrow.

So- I’m just going to go on some verbal diarrhea.
I’m trying to rationalize all this training I’m about to do for this race in May and I had a long talk with the wife about it, what my want’s needs and desires are. It’s complicated. I don’t think anyone would really understand the internal issues I’m having with moving forward with this whole adventure. Another issue I am having was I *THOUGHT* I had found a new form of training and come to find out, the more I read about it the more I am becoming a bit skeptical. All roads once again point to “Running is not one size fits all” It’s going to take work. It’s going to take me being more proactive with my coach and adjusting things as we go. I’ll try to meet up with her to discuss. I’ll see how January goes. I think I can work around the miles with the other work I want to do. It will mean more meal planning, more working out at lunch and doing workouts after work.
You know..I like the guys at trailrunner nation but I swear they don’t do their homework. They basically let anyone on and it’s a 45 min infomercial for whatever the guest is pushing. Case in point is the latest craze of doing more weights and less running. It’s funny for someone who has two books Brian Mackenzie has very little on the internet in regards to finishes and race reports. I do see a lot of comments about him DNF’ing all the time.
I’m convinced I need miles AND weight workouts.
I know I haven’t written much lately but didn’t realize that it’s been 2.5 months. Shame on me.
So here is a quick update on happenings.
Heather broke. Like..broken. I apparently am very good at breaking her so I have forced her to find a real coach..one who won’t break her every season.
In early May I ran a 25k trail race and finished in the top 25ish. I honestly don’t remember but what I can tell you was that it was a lot of fun. I had some serious stomach issues that resulted in some good story telling later on. The course was brand new and was kind of nutty. I plan on hitting up this one again next year.
Pineland 50k- A bunch of us rented a lake house and made the trip up to pineland. We had several people running on saturday and then I was solo for the 50k. My wife, Heather , and Steve crewed me through to one of the best race finishes of my short career. 34th overall and 7th in my age group. I’m still paying for it in my recovery but it was worth it. Also got to meet up with Astrid at the start and it was nice catching up. She had a fantastic race also. I think after last years mud mania we all just couldn’t help but run fast. Ton of fun and I plan on doing it again next year.
So I finally made the decision to hire a coach. I hired Kristina Marie Folcik-Welts. I have known Kristina and her husband Ryan for a few months now and have followed them on the racing circuit for a bit now. Kristina’s focus is on the beginner runner but I talked with her and we both agreed that she could give me a good running plan and some accountability to reach some of my goals this summer. My main focus is the 75 mile stage race in August.
Earlier this year there was some noise about the Vermont 100 possibly ending due to the RD stepping down and no one really wanting to step in. Land owners are not happy with the event and it just seems like it’s possible that it’s not going to be around next year. It might..most likely someone will step up. It’s one of the originals and without it the grandslam of ultrarunning will be a thing of the past.
What does this mean for me though. I’m not sure I want to count on the race existing next year. Instead I think I want to keep next year open and maybe find a 100 mile race that I am interested in. There are plenty to choose from that don’t require a lottery to get into. I’m not interested in Western States or Leadville. I’ll find the right one I have no doubt. It will just take some time. Until then I have so many cool trails to run in the whites. Plenty of FKT’s routes to enjoy. This summer I plan on doing the presi traverse and if I find the energy the Pemi loop.
It’s mid-june and we plan on attacking the 4k’s – This sunday we are going to be fast packing/ running Pierce and Eisenhower.
Did I mention I broke my wife too? Her calf is all ganked up from running the trails… She made a joke the other day that we should all have different traffic signs on the back of our shirts… Mine is “Do not Follow” Heathers is “Speed enforced by Radar” Lise “Slower traffic keep right.”…
As much as I enjoy the digital format… There is something about hand writing that is much more engaging. I would love to leave a library of hand written journals for someone to read someday.
I found some really neat ways to make leather covered journals.
A few years ago I got fascinated with book binding. If I ever got a chance to never have to work again I would take classes in boston and learn how to hand bind books. I have NO idea why I am obsessed with it. It seems so…amazing. Hard to explain.
There is a school in Boston that specializes in a lot of these lost arts.
It’s the North Bennet Street school. Really..I have no idea why I want to do this so bad.

Signed up for the Emerald Necklace three stage race. Basically….75 miles, done over three days. 13k in elevation over the three days. I signed Heater up as a teammate. Lise is going to be our primary crew chief , moving our camp for us while we run each stage. After signing up I was a bit sick to my stomach…Heater just laughed. Glad to see she is in a better mind set than me on this right now. I’ll come around, just seems so daunting to me right now but then again I haven’t run farther than 3 miles in two weeks.
I think it’s going to take a bit of planning but we have plenty of time and lots of gear to buy so how can that be so bad?
The summer of taking it easy just turned into one crazy run after another…A brief overview of what’s ahead.
Amherst Trail race- 15 miles (may 3rd)
Pineland- 32 Miles. (May 28th ish..)
Exeter Trail race- 10 Miles (June 28th)
Then things get silly…
Loon Mountain Race – 7 Miles of hell (July 6th)
BearBrook “marathon” – 28 miles plus all the miles of course marking the week and days before with Ryan (July 19th)
Fish Fry camp! – It’s in July sometime. Hoping to get as many people up north from the team as we can. We are going to stay at Amanda’s camp and I hope to run Isolation. Everyone else is going to throw beer cans at Heather and I but Isolation is a bucket list run. Need to get this one done. expecting it to be an 18 Mile day.
I start my VT 100 Training. Expecting it to take one year. Still on the fence on whether I want to hire a coach or not. Not sure I can afford it. I’ll talk with Kristina and maybe I can work the first 6 months on my own and then hire Kristina for the final six to get me to the 100.
Pemi-loop FKT – 32 Miles loop of the white mountain Pemi-wilderness. FKT is in the 8-9 hour range ..hoping to complete in 12. Heater is in on this one…going to be crazy. Date? TBD
Franconia Loop FKT- 7 miles…took 7 hours just hiking last time. FKT is 1:43 for men… Date TBD but will need to be a weekday. This is the most hiked loop in the whites..Early weekday will allow us to move the fastest.
Emerald Necklace Stage race- 75 Miles. Aug 22nd-24th WTF are we thinking.
Kismet – BEAST of the east. It will be Heaters first attempt at the big boy. 13 miles. 3rd weekend of Sept. This is by far the hardest half marathon I have ever run.
Vermont 50? Probably out this year. The stage race is going to cost a fortune especially after all the gear purchase.
Vulcans Fury Trail Race – 13 miles Oct 18th.
Roaring falls Trail race – 10 Miles ? I can’t remember Nov 8th.
Other goals this summer. Take climbing classes. Do a few hikes….Get the back yard done and the roof’s replaced.
I have so much vacation time at work that I am taking this year for me. I burned out on this project the past three years. If I don’t take the time for myself I can’t see me keeping my sanity this year.
I still would love to quit and be a rent a ‘guy’ All my friends are convinced that they could hire me for one day a week.
Oh and somehow I need to work in parking enforcement in Rye this summer…… GAHHH
Ran two miles with Lise yesterday and it felt really good. Of course I coughed like a mofo the rest of the day but I suspect this may be how it is for a bit.
Training starts again, 5 am Monday morning at Heaters house. She’s working a double Monday but wants to get a run in.
I’ll be working in concord, plan on picking up a trail map of the Emerald trail. 75 mile stage race in August. Costs a fortune but looks like torture…right up my alley.
Next weekend is the seacoast half in Newmarket. Not sure I’m ready for it but will probably go since steve is insane and running the thing with no training. He is sicker in the head than me.
Guess I should see when the sign up deadline is. If it stays warm all week I’m guessing we could get 10-11 in at pawtuckaway on Sunday. That would be a good weekend. Hopefully it’s not too much but we will see.
